The Journey

While living in the Bronx, NY and completing college in the late 90's, Jason Velez began working in the film business. His first few years of work came to him by way of Cinematographer Rick Malkames. Jason primarily worked with Rick on documentaries and interviews. In 1999, Jason started to branch out as a gaffer in the indie film world of NYC. Those first few years were spent working on extremely small budget films. The crews were young and relatively inexperienced, but they had incredible energy and enthusiasm. They would get things done with the bare minimum and the materials they had available to them were never enough. They had to be creative with what they had. This was the base that would set the ground work to this very day. Along the way, Jason has been lucky to work with some of the greatest DP's and Directors in the world. In 2020, Jason decided to start taking his still photography seriously. Additionally, the move to cinematographer was just around the corner for him. Jason believes lighting to be the strongest force we have when creating images. He is very much looking forward to working with directors who want to bring their vision to life with the power of light, the lens and the movement.
